Bridgestone has created sustainable natural rubber tyres

The first ever tyre made wholly of natural rubber has been revealed by Japanese firm Bridgestone.

Made using rubber derived from a desert shrub called guayule, all of the tyre`s construction is made from the natural rubber that is sustainable and could allow rubber production in more parts of the world.

As global demand for new cars increases, so does demand for tyres and Bridgestone says its new design will help alleviate the pressure on existing rubber trees that are mostly cultivated in Southeast Asia.

The guayule shrub grows mostly in the south west of the USA and Mexico and is cultivated in arid regions, so it could potentially bring a lucrative harvest to areas that would otherwise be left barren.

Bridgestone has cultivated a 114 hectare plot for its new tyre development research. The company says it now has all the processes in place to allow the development and cultivation of guayule to make all of its tyres from 100% natural and sustainable materials by 2050.
