KOCHI, INDIA (Commodity Online): In a bid to reduce the soaring rubber imports which put the farmers in trouble by leading to a price crash, India is planning to boost the output in a big way.

Nirmala Sitharaman, commerce minister, said rubber will be grown in non-traditional areas like North East to boost the output. She said government is contemplating measures on how to support the small-scale farmers.

Imports of rubber have hurt the farmers in a big way. Tyre makers are making bulk purchases from international markets resulting in surged imports which hurt the prospects of the domestic farmers.

India`s natural rubber imports have registered a growth of 19% in November, 2014, according to the latest Rubber Board data.

Prompted by the purchases made by tyre makers the imports jumped to 33,156 tonnes in November, the state-run Rubber Board said. On the other hand, production in November plunged by a quarter on year to 64,000 tonnes. This reflects the impact of farmers leaving tapping distressed over price crash.

India`s natural rubber consumption in the month increased nearly 12 per cent on year to 85,000 tonnes, the Board said in a statement.

The Narendra Modi-led India Government has appointed a parliamentary standing committee to study the about the rubber and tyre industries.

The parliamentary standing committee on commerce will tour West Bengal, Tripura and Kerala January-February to analyse the situation of the rubber and tyre industry in the country
